WebStripper becomes PageNest V3

WebStripper has now been renamed PageNest, and version 3 is now available.

The chief new features of V3 are:
  • Completely rewritten HTML parsing engine. The new engine is up to twice as fast the previous version and also makes it easier for us to add some exciting new features in future updates.
  • Fully revised support for logging in (authentication). PageNest can now log in via both HTTP and forms based logins. You do not need to know which type of login the site uses - PageNest will automatically use the correct method.
  • Cookie support: V3 fully supports the sending and receiving of cookies (this can be turned off from the site properties/Options page).
  • V3 includes full CSS support for more accurate page reproduction.
  • The Site Wizard has been completely revamped with icons instead of text links between the pages.
  • Version 3 introduces 'Update Groups'. An update group specifies dates and times when a site will be automatically updated. You can, for example, create a group of sites to download before you arrive at work in the morning.
  • The 'site tree', as well as other parts of PageNest will now show the favicon for a site, it one is available.
  • An optional icon in the system tray allows faster access to PageNest.

V3 Beta 4 - Create a personalised daily newspaper of your favorite sites

V3 beta 4 of WebStripper has been uploaded.

This beta marks a change in focus for WebStripper. It has been, and always will be a leading offline browser, but with this version you can use it to create a daily (our weekly, monthly or hourly) newspaper created from your favorite websites.

Sites can be added to Update Groups. Each Update Group gives flexible options to tell WebStripper when the sites in the group will be updated. WebStripper will download the sites at the specified times and add them to it's recent updates list, which is displayed at start up on the Welcome Page. You can use the Next Site and Previous Site buttons on the toolbar to move between the downloaded sites.

Other changes in this version include:

  • Redesigned, much prettier Site Wizard: each page now has it's own icon. Click the icon to go straight to the page, or use it as a wizard with the Forward and Back buttons.
  • Added an item on the Options menu to edit the Update Groups
  • Fixed: CSS files will now be parsed properly (previously they where converted to zero byte files).
  • Javascript which uses strings within strings will now be parsed properly
  • Fixed issue with fileicon.ico file(s) being added to the list of files on each update.
  • Fixed code to determine whether a login uses HTTP or a form.
  • Added support for @import fields within CSS
  • Fixed parsing of quotes within quotes within javascript (previously this would cause parsing of the page to finish).
  • Fixed display of Favicons when the path on the hard disk contains a space.

You can download a trial copy here and registered users can download a full version by following the link in their registration emails. Note that this beta will expire towards the end of the year.

  • Fix to an access violation when viewing a site via the Browse link in the Welcome Page (and probably via other links also).

  • Menu items to 'Open in (external) Browser' and 'Open in (Windows) Explorer' have been added to the Site main menu bar list. These options make it easier to view a website in your preferred browser and to explore and edit a site.

V2.74 - Bug Hunting

V2.74 is now available which includes a number of bug fixes:

  • First up was a bug introduced in the last release where a couple of dialog boxes showing numbers would be displayed before the Site Wizard was displayed. Oops.

  • V2.73 also introduced a bug affecting AutoUpdating sites which where set to download on a Saturday. On each Saturday every such site would enter into an infinite loop of downloads.

  • The main forms window state should now be restored properly on restarting.

  • WebStrippers use of multiple monitors should now be much better (I don't have the facilities to test this. If you use multiple monitors I would be grateful for any feedback).

Two new features are a friendlier date format in the 'Welcome page' and the Queued Sites window and system which will allow you to submit bug reports directly to me if an exception occurs.

You should also find there is less delay when clicking on a site in the site tree and being able to view the site, or move to another item.

As always, you can download the latest trial version here. Paying users can upgrade for free using the link in their registration email.

Version 3 beta 2 Released

The latest beta test version has now been uploaded. This version includes all the updates to version 2 since the first beta was released.

It also includes a completely revised process for logging in to websites which includs support for forms based logins.

There are two methods websites can use for logging in (or authentication). The first uses a small pop up window and is called HTTP authentication. The second uses a from built into a webpage. This method is typically used for logging in to bulletin boards and shopping websites.

WebStripper has always supported HTTP logins. This new version adds support for form logins. WebStripper automatically works out which type of login is required for the site - all you need to do is specify the page address.

For forms logins you can tell WebStripper both the page you want to log in at, and a separate page on which to start the download. This may be useful on some sites.

This version also adds the ability to enter your username and password when you start the download, so that your details are not stored in WebStrippers data files.

Note that this beta will expire in December 2007.

You can download the trial versionhere. Regsitered users can download the beta by visiting the webpage listed in their registration email (don't use the direct download link).

Version 3 beta 1 released

The first beta of version 3 has been released.

This beta includes a completely rewritten HTML parser which is up to 50% faster than the old version. The new engine is also much more versatile than the old one and will make it much easier to add new features.

I won't make any promises as to what new features are planned in case they don't appear and people get disappointed, but there should be some nice extra stuff before too long.

The only known issues are that some extra tags may be left in the source code when a site is reparsed, and comments may be searched for links when they shouldn't be. Neither of these will affect browsing of the downloaded sites.
