WebStripperTM FAQ - Getting started

Adding the site

The easiest way to get a web address into WebStripper is to navigate to the site with your browser. When you've found the page you want to start with open WebStripper and click the New site button. The New site wizard will appear with the page name ready in the Address box. WebStripper uses sensible defaults for the site name and location on your hard disk but you can edit them if you wish.

Clicking on the Range page lets you set how far WebStripper should look for files and what file types to download. Most of the options are fairly obvious. Sub pages only means that WebStripper will only look for pages in the starting folder and subfolders of the starting folder. Graphics, which are needed for making up the pages, will be downloaded from anywhere on the site. Both the Range and File types sections have Advanced options which give you even finer control over what to download. Press F1 for the online help on these options.

Downloading

You can press the Finish button in the New site wizard at any point to start downloading. The site will be downloaded and then parsed (When links in the pages are changed to local links on your hard disk). Note that for large sites the parsing phase can take quite a time (Version 2 displays a progress bar)

Browsing

Using version 2 the site will be displayed once it has finished downloading, or when you select it in the site tree. For older versions, scroll to the site in the site tree and either double click the site or single click and press the Browse button. The built in browser will display the site and you can browse as you would in any other browser. By default the Home button takes you to the 'root' page of the site. The return to the file listing click the File list button.

More options

You can place a site into a particular category by selecting the category, right clicking and selecting New site. Or, once downloaded, you can drag and drop sites around the tree.
